《国乐大典》节目内容围绕中国民乐主题展开,6个中国顶级民乐乐团首发,多支补位乐队参与,共有12个乐团的多位国乐演奏高手同台竞技。乐团将以传统民族乐器演奏中国经典音乐曲目,通过12场器乐比拼,最终获胜的6支乐队将登国家大剧院国家舞台上演国乐巅峰盛典。据介绍,节目组打破常规器乐节目之中只有乐器演奏的传统,将经典的国乐作品重新配器编曲,糅合戏曲、舞蹈、吟唱、吟诵、话剧、诗赋等多种文化元素进行全新改编。竞演乐团融合创新民乐演奏手法与多元艺术形式,带来意想不到的新颖演奏版本,重释国乐经典曲目。

首发阵容中,包括龚琳娜老锣夫妇带领的龚锣新艺术乐团、由壮、满、藏、蒙、维吾尔五个民族的音乐人组成的五色风乐团、用唯美水晶乐器重新诠释当代东方之美的女子水晶乐坊、来自内蒙古大草原以流行交响乐演奏马头琴的神骏乐团,以及掀起维港民乐旋风的赤焱乐团、具有浓郁地方音乐特色和独特艺术风格的海上城潮乐团。节目组走访 的乐团既有大众熟知的中央民乐团,也有广东本土的潮州民乐团。
