踢踏舞来源自美国百老汇，一种民间风俗的舞蹈。踢踏舞的英文名称是”TAP DANCE”，TAP是拍打扣击的意思，它的正式形成是在20年代的美国。在这之前，爱尔兰移民和非洲奴隶把各自的民间舞蹈带到了这块移民大陆上，这些民间舞蹈逐步融合形成了新的舞蹈形式–踢踏舞。

在踢踏舞的发展过程中，有几个非常关键的人物–WILLIAM HENRY LANE是一位伟大的节奏舞蹈家，他把非洲舞步加入到爱尔兰的吉格舞中，强调节奏与打击胜过旋律。其后，又主要有三位踢踏舞者奠定了踢踏舞的基础，他们分别是KING RASTUS BROWN、BILL ROBINSON、JOHN BUBBLES。BROWN首创了成熟的踢踏舞步，他的舞步特点是多为平的脚形，其后的ROBINSON在此基础上发展了自己的舞步，突出了脚尖的技术。而BUBBLES则创造了称为CRAMPROLL的舞步，他的舞步特点是同时运用脚尖和后跟。
