琴弦分为三大类:羊肠弦,尼龙弦,钢丝弦。

羊肠弦是最早人们用羊肠或羊筋制成。后来冶金技术的进步,出现了细而坚韧的金属丝,人们用这种金属丝代替了易断的羊肠E弦,后来又有人用金属丝缠在羊肠线的外面,这样琴弦音量更大,也更耐用。今天的羊肠弦就是这样制作的。

羊肠弦的优点是:手感柔和,音色温暖而有内涵,泛音丰富,更接近人声。 缺点是:运弓反应较慢,另外新弦装到琴上要好几天才能稳定下来,对温湿度的变化比较敏感。 最著名的羊肠弦是德国Pirastro 产的 Olive。

尼龙弦是用合成的尼龙芯来代替羊肠, 外面依旧缠着金属丝。它是一般大家平常用的最多的一种弦,它的最大特点是兼备羊肠弦和钢丝弦的优点,既有钢丝弦的音量和稳定,又有羊肠弦的优美音色,虽然尼龙弦中间的尼龙芯也会因为温湿度的变化对其产生影响,但是比羊肠弦要小得多,一般定音两天左右就稳定了,而羊肠弦一般要5天左右。
