在冬季，贝加尔湖周边气温平均为-38℃，每年1月开始结冰，到5月之后才解冻，冰层大致在70-115厘米之间 ，贝加尔湖巨大的水体使其湖滨夏季气温比周围地区约低6℃，冬季约高11℃，具有海洋性效应，但位于西伯利亚的贝加尔湖冬季仍然十分寒冷，一月平均低温在-38度，但是冰层下的水温仍然保持3.5度-4.5度之间。19世纪70年代，贝加尔湖融冰的时间开始于每年5月10日左右，瑞士科学家的一项研究表明，在1869年和1999年之间，贝加尔湖开始融冰的时间平均每十年提前半天。在1869年和1920年之间，贝加尔湖开始融冰的时间平均每十年提前3天左右。[4]
