在冬季,贝加尔湖周边气温平均为-38℃,每年1月开始结冰,到5月之后才解冻,冰层大致在70-115厘米之间 ,贝加尔湖巨大的水体使其湖滨夏季气温比周围地区约低6℃,冬季约高11℃,具有海洋性效应,但位于西伯利亚的贝加尔湖冬季仍然十分寒冷,一月平均低温在-38度,但是冰层下的水温仍然保持3.5度-4.5度之间。19世纪70年代,贝加尔湖融冰的时间开始于每年5月10日左右,瑞士科学家的一项研究表明,在1869年和1999年之间,贝加尔湖开始融冰的时间平均每十年提前半天。在1869年和1920年之间,贝加尔湖开始融冰的时间平均每十年提前3天左右。[4]
自1920年以来,贝加尔湖东南湖区的融冰时间一直相当稳定,冰层的形成时间推迟冰层存留的时间相比过去缩短。数据表明,自1992年以来,贝加尔湖中部和北部冰层的形成时间和融冰开始时间均推迟了,冰层存留时间也更久。温度的变化导致湖水不断压缩与膨胀,便会形成冰面裂
