Ma-tou Qin or Morinhor: Mongolian Fiddle with a Horse Head Scroll

Ma-tou Qin or Morinhor: Mongolian Fiddle with a Horse Head Scroll

Bowed chordaphone, the instrument has quite a few names, such as hor or morinhor in Mongolian, huqin, or huqin with horse hair, or huqin with bow and string, in the Han Chinese language, and chor in some Eastern Mongolian regions. It also spreads in the Mongolian groups of Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Gansu and Xinjiang areas. The fiddle makes full use of horses, bones as the neck, skin as the cover for sound box, hair as the strings and the bow hair, and even the scroll carved into the shape of a horse head. Its strings are traditionally tuned a fourth apart.
