BEI: CONCH
Lip-reed aerophone. The ground end of a large conch can be made into the mouthpiece. While blowing, lips can be used as reeds. In the period from the Sui to the Five Dynasties (581~960) the instrument entered the accompanying orchestra of the court music and dance. Influenced by the Indian Buddhist rituals, the type was also used on religious occasions. In China’s southern minority groups it was used both for religious chanting and for accompanying singing and dancing, as well as for warning signals against foreign invasions. As for the Han people, the blowing of the instrument is acted as a signal to go to sea. Besides, it was a tool for message delivery in ancient armies.
