PAIBAN: CLAPPERS
Struck idiophone. The type appeared as early as in the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420~589). The paiban clappers are often constructed of five or six rectangular slabs of hard wood. The type with nine slabs is called “large paiban”. The instrument was commonly used for musical theatres and ballad singing in the Yuan date (1206~1368). Its tone is clear and solid. The bangu frame drum is its frequent company in a solo performance of narrative singing. It also accompanies the performance of local musical theatres. In the ensemble for Fujian nanqu musical drama, the type with five slabs can be seen, a survival of the earlier form.
